Federal Government offices are closed on November 11. Other businesses are closed. Almost all retailers are open on holidays and have sales. This year Veterans Day (Nov. 11) falls on a Friday when the post office is normally open for business. With the holiday falling at the end of the week, many people are asking, Day prior to Thanksgiving. is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

For 2016, Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, happens on Friday, November 11th. If you’re planning on spending the day shopping or dining out, I have great news: most stores, restaurants, shopping centers, and malls are open on Veterans Day. However, some may be operating on a holiday schedule with limited or reduced hours of operation. Some businesses are closed on Veterans Day in order to give their employees the day off. Here’s a quick rundown of what is open and what is closed on November 11, 2016:

BANKS are CLOSED on Veterans Day.

BARS & CLUBS are OPEN on Veterans Day.

Sunday, 11 November Veterans Day 2018 USA.

 

BIG BOX STORES are OPEN on Veterans Day: Walmart, Kmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Trader Joe’s, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, PetSmart, Kohl’s, Belk, Bed Bath & Beyond, Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Academy Sports + Outdoors, etc. Many locations will be holding special Veterans Day sales and promotions!

CASUAL RESTAURANTS are OPEN on Veterans Day. Many offer free breakfast, lunch, or dinner to veterans and active military personnel. All of these restaurants will be offering Veterans Day free meals at most locations: Applebee’s, Baker’s Square, Black Angus Steakhouse, Bob Evans, Buffalo Wild Wings, California Pizza Kitchen, Chevy’s, Denny’s, Chili’s, El Torito, Famous Dave’s, Friendly’s, Hooters, Hurricane Grill & Wings, IHOP, Mimi’s Cafe, O’ Charley’s, Olive Garden, On The Border, Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Red Robin, Ruby Tuesday, Shoney’s, Sizzler Steakhouse, T.G.I. Friday’s, Texas Roadhouse, Twin Peaks, and Village Inn. Be sure to call ahead and confirm participation.

CONVENIENCE STORES are OPEN on Veterans Day: 7-Eleven, Kwik Trip, Circle K, Kum & Go, Casey’s, QuikTrip, SuperAmerica, Speedway, Raceway, etc. Many locations are open 24 hours, even on holidays.

FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS are OPEN on Veterans Day. Free food will be served to active military servicemembers and veterans at many locatons of Arby’s, Back Yard Burgers, Dairy Queen, Goodcents Deli & Subs, Krystal, McDonald’s, Wienerschnitzel, and White Castle. Be sure to call and confirm participation before heading out.

GROCERY STORES are OPEN on Veterans Day: Kroger, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Cub Foods, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Safeway, Price Chopper, Von’s, Fred Meyer, Food Lion, Gerbes, Dillons, H-E-B., Ingles, Q.F.C., Hy-Vee, Harris Teeter, BI-LO, etc. Some locations may be operating with reduced hours.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES are CLOSED on Veterans Day. Nearly all federal, state, county, and city agencies are closed on Veterans Day.

LIQUOR STORES are generally OPEN on Veterans Day. However, this may depend on which state and/or city you are located in. Most areas allow alcoholic beverages to be sold on Veterans Day while others prohibit these sales.

MOVIE THEATERS are OPEN on Veterans Day: AMC Theaters, Cinemark, Carmike, Regal Theaters, etc. Many theatres have additional holiday showtimes scheduled for Veterans Day.

PHARMACIES & DRUG STORES are OPEN on Veterans Day: Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, etc. These retailers are almost always open. However, the actual pharmacy may be closed or operating reduced hours for the holiday. Pharmacy departments in grocery and big box stores might have varying hours of operation during the Veterans Day holiday.

POST OFFICE (USPS) is CLOSED on Veterans Day.

SCHOOLS may be OPEN or CLOSED on Veterans Day depending on local preference. This includes grade schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, etc.

SHOPPING MALLS AND MALL ANCHOR STORES are OPEN on Veterans Day: JC Penney, Sears, Neiman Marcus, Bergners, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carson’s, Herberger’s, Younkers, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gordmans, Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom, etc. Many locations will be having Veterans Day sales and special promotions!

Of course, these are general rules and there may be exceptions. If you’re not sure, be sure to call your favorite store or restaurant and confirm their holiday hours before leaving home. This avoids unpleasant surprises and unnecessary drives, only to find your favorite shopping or dining place is closed on Veterans Day 2016. Plan ahead, be safe, and have a great holiday!
